In 2006, an estimated 20.4 million Americans aged 12 years of age or older were current (past month) illicit drug users, which represent approximately 8.3 percent of the population aged 12 and over.  While marijuana had the largest number of abusers, prescription drugs used for non-medical purposes ranked second, surpassing all other illicit drug users combined.
